An arts festival in the Kangaroo Valley

Looking for something to do this weekend? Why not make the one-hour drive to the picturesque Kangaroo Valley to attend Sculpture in the Valley. A perfect autumn day trip. As one of the most acclaimed arts events in NSW, the number of visitors is growing steadily with each exhibition. This year, organisers are expecting some 2000 visitors over the three days from Friday, May 3 to Sunday, May 5.

A stellar line-up of Australian sculptors will be part of the 2019 Sculpture in the Valley Exhibition. The event is a cornerstone of the biennial Arts in the Valley Festival. This year, the sculptures will be on display at ‘Cedar Grove’ – the home of John and Denise Wright near Kangaroo Valley village. The property offers both an intimate rural setting and expansive valley views for the outdoor sculptures and a professional exhibition space for the indoor exhibition.

Among those who have confirmed their presence this year are Elyssa Sykes-Smith, David Ball, Michael Purdy, Ian Bell, Rhonda Castle, Stephen Harrison, Ulan Murray and Ella Szpindler. 

Sculpture Director and Curator, Colleen Fry, says the works are outstanding and there will be a choice of 140 pieces on display. “The major appeal of this event is that all of the items are available for purchase which adds a dimension not often found in other exhibitions,” she said.

As well as taking part in the exhibition, local South Coast artist, Elyssa Sykes-Smith, has also been conducting a special Sculptor in Residence program with the students at the Kangaroo Valley Primary School and their work will also be showcased over the weekend.
