Nestled deep within the bushland of Kangaroo Valley is Joe Mungovan’s studio, a quaint cottage where he has created pure magic. His debut album, A Flower in the Weeds, is a blend of dreamy pop and indie rock which explores love, natural disasters and the heartaches of the global pandemic. Drawing inspiration from the natural beauty that surrounds his studio, Joe has managed to produce an infectious, layered and introspective album that feels like a daydream. Currently on his Breakfast with Joe tour, which sees him playing for free at cafes up and down the coast, Joe is loving playing live again and can’t wait to hit the road with his band in 2022.

You have a very distinct style – what got you into music originally?
Ever since I can remember I always wanted to be a drummer. My parents told me that I drove them mad from a very young age bashing on pots and pans.

Why did you decide to create your studio in Kangaroo Valley? Did the area influence your music?
I wanted to create a space where I could create at any time of the day or night without distraction. Moving to Kangaroo Valley seemed like the perfect idea for that and it turned out to be. I feel as though I am influenced by all that is around me, so the place definitely found its way into these songs.

What was the process like in creating A Flower in the Weeds?
It was like most things in life – up and down and all around but we got there in the end. It was an experience I will never forget.

How does this new music differ from your past works?
I feel as though each body of work has its own sonic place. This album definitely feels a lot lighter and more spacious than my previous work.

You’re currently on your ‘Breakfast with Joe’ tour – what is it that you love most about live gigs?
I love discovering new places and meeting different people along the way.

Do you think you’ll do a tour with the full band once restrictions are fully lifted?
I originally wanted to tour with the full band in November and December of this year but unfortunately that didn’t seem possible when we were trying to book the tour. The band and I will hit the road next year in support of the album – I can’t wait!
Until then, I’ll be performing throughout November and December at my ‘Breakfast With Joe’ Cafe Tour. I kicked off in Kiama, and Wollongong, followed by Culburra and Berry.

What advice would you offer to someone wanting to get into the music industry?
The most important thing is the music. Make art that you love.
