Issue 27 Winter 2025

$10.00

Winter has arrived, and while the pace around town may slow down a little, there’s still plenty happening across our coastal community.

In this issue, we’re shining a light on the locals who keep things moving whether it’s small businesses adapting for the season – meet Crystal from It’s Home Baked (pg 14) and Stan from The Grand Hotel (pg 20), changemaker Jeff Tougher who continues to advocate for first responder safety following the death of his son Steven (pg 10), or creatives like Jagger Leith (pg 30) bringing fresh ideas to familiar places. You’ll find stories that celebrate the energy, resilience, and connection that make the Illawarra such a great place to live year-round.

Did you check out our fab cover image at Port Kembla by Micaela Adams? A huge thanks to our ‘People of Port’ – Ana, Elle, Helani, Isuru, Sarah, Daniel, Danny, Leon and MIllie the dog – for being this issue’s cover stars! If you haven’t checked out this slice of history – the World War 2 anti-tank “pyramid” blocks at Heritage Park – it’s an incredible spot, with truly uninterrupted ocean views.

We’ve also included a few winter warmers – a cozy soup recipe, op shop reviews, and things to do that don’t require perfect weather … hello jazz nights and pub lunches!

As always, thank you for your support – whether you’re reading, contributing, or sharing one of our stories with a neighbour. Coal Coast Magazine is made for our community, by our community, and we love hearing from you. Stay warm, stay connected, and enjoy the read!
